NYC Best Weekend Bets

Look, first and foremost, I am going to do all you bad sons and daughters a favor by reminding you that SUNDAY IS MOTHERS DAY! So don’t fuck it up, yeah? Because everyone knows that bad child-to-mother vibes can result in serious injury or total body swaps, as was thoroughly documented in Freaky Friday (which really should have been called Traumatic Tuesday, but w/e…), which JUST SO HAPPENS to be screening at the Film Forum this Sunday, and as such will be our GIF guide this go-round. But before we get into that (and everything else), let’s FIRST talk about what you may have missed on BYT this week:

Here we go:

  • Let’s kick things off with a good old fashioned release party! Awkwafina’s having one over at Baby’s All Right tonight, and tickets will set you back fifteen bucks a pop.
  • Or for a chance of musical pace, head up the street to Rough Trade for a show from Those Darlins, Adia Victoria and Johnny Ain’t Bad! Tickets to that one are also fifteen each.
  • And/or you could also always just dance your face off at Verboten tonight thanks to the all vinyl Holy Ghost! set that’s kicking off at 10pm, but be prepared to cough up twenty-five bones to get in.
  • MEANWHILE over in Manhattan we’ve got a pretty solid lineup happening at Le Poisson Rouge; Glasser, Missy Mazzoli and Victoire AND Noveller will be playin’ tunes from 7:30pm onward for twenty bucks.
  • If you don’t mind heading a BIT further uptown, though, then I’m going to highly suggest grabbing tickets to see Tove Styrke at Webster Hall tonight for fifteen bucks a ticket.
  • Too poor for everything I just said? Try your luck at getting on the list for a Converse in-store Made By You party, where there will be free music, free food, and (most importantly) FREE BOOZE!

  • You can also head to another free edition of Chelsea Nights thanks to Paper Garden Records! Tonight’s lineup is VERY solid, ’cause we’ve got Sam Kogon, Belle Mare AND Shilpa Ray on deck beginning at 6:30pm.
  • Or if it really IS that free booze that you care about, then I’ll redirect you to MOSCOT this evening, where Delicate Steve will be playing a free set featuring free drinks for the 21+ crowd.
  • If comedy is more your jam, though, probably skip out on everything I just told you to do and INSTEAD make your way to the Bell House for Greg Proops Is the Smartest Man In the World // tickets are fifteen bucks.
  • Or if that’s too expensive for you, head BACK into Manhattan to UCB Chelsea, where Chris Gethard’s Career Suicide show will start at about 8pm for the VERY low price of five bucks a ticket.
  • Amber Tamblyn will also be at Strand Books tonight with Ira Glass for a conversation and a reading from her new collection of poetry Dark Sparkler; admission is either 1. buying a copy of the book, or 2. buying a fifteen dollar Strand gift card.

  • My top pick (music-wise) for the evening is Cameo Gallery’s lineup, which has got St. Lenox, OOFJ and Belly Fire taking the stage at 8pm for just eight bucks in advance, ten day of show.
  • And if you WANT TO, you could stick around for the late Cameo show tonight, which includes Braille, L-Vis 1990 and Seafloor. This one starts at 11:59pm, and will also cost eight bucks in advance, ten day of show.
  • The Oh Land show that’s happening around the corner at Music Hall of Williamsburg comes a close second, though, so if you have twenty bucks to spare, you MIGHT consider grabbing a ticket.
  • AND I would be remiss not to tell you that you’ve got a second Tove Styrke opportunity tonight in the form of a Rough Trade show! Tickets are thirteen bucks in advance, fifteen day of show.
  • And while we’re on the subject of Rough Trade, the late show is ALSO pretty solid tonight; we’ve got Halfbluud AND Cultfever playing a gig for just ten bucks, though AS I MENTIONED EARLIER, you could win a pair of tickets by entering HERE within the next 24 hours.
  • I also suspect a large percentage of people will flock to Baby’s All Right in the name of Natural Child‘s gig tonight; openers include Faux Ferocious and Car Seat Headrest, and tickets are twelve bucks each.

  • Completely broke? Get yourself over to Lot 45 before 11pm tonight and they’ll let you into a Broke City 50 w/ Mike Servito, Octo Octa and Cosby show (HA HA HA, COSBY SHOW) fo’ FREE.
  • Of course, I do acknowledge that some of you still retain that #BROOKLYNFEAR, in which case I will redirect you to Manhattan to get your tunes fix at NYU’s annual Strawberry Fest, which runs from 12:30-4:30, features Cloud Nothings, LVL UP, Celestial Shore and Field Trip PLUS a giant strawberry shortcake AND is free.
  • If you have a normal person job, though, you probably can’t get off work because SUMMER FRIDAYS AREN’T HERE YET FOR MOST OF YOU. In which case just go see Sunflower Bean at the Studio at Webster Hall at the more reasonable hour of 8pm for ten bucks a person.
  • If music is completely not your scene, however, you might want to head BACK to Brooklyn, where Videology will be hosting two dope events: 1. a screening of Ghostbusters with a Stay Puft marshmallow roast for $8…
  • And 2. TITANIC…Entirely From Memory, which is pretty much exactly what it sounds like (people reenact Titanic entirely from memory // hilarity ensues) for ten bucks per ticket.

  • You know what, guys? Dancing is important, so I suggest we all go do that tonight at the Plastic Plates show that’s happening at Cameo Gallery at 11:59pm. Tickets are ten bucks in advance, fifteen day of show // GET THEM EARLY.
  • This, of course, is after the LIVE Penguin Prison set that’s happening around the corner at Music Hall of Williamsburg earlier on, which also includes Midnight Magic AND Rush Midnight. Tickets to that one are twenty in advance, twenty-two day of show.
  • I’m also going to highly suggest that we go get THE WEIRDEST with CHERYL at the Bell House tonight, because it’s been TOO LONG! The theme is “Giddyup Psycho”, and tickets are ten bucks each.
  • Meanwhile, Juan Wauters will be celebrating an album release show at Shea Stadium this evening, so if you’ve got ANOTHER ten bucks to spare, then you might want to go that route instead.

  • OR if you’re a Pissed Jeans fan, then you’ll want to grab tickets to the Baby’s All Right show that’s happening tonight for fifteen bucks per person before all of those sell out.
  • Or if you prefer a world of pure imagination to one of tunes, then head to Videology for a free screening of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (the 1971 good one) // each table comes equipped with a Candyland board AND endless free candy, so PROBABLY GO.
  • More into LOLs? Head to UCB East tonight to catch The Andy Rocco Show (starting at 11:59pm // WHOA PAST YER BEDTIME!) featuring Charla Lauriston (Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt) and MORE for just five bucks.
  • And while we’re talking about late-night things, there is a midnight screening of motherfucking Back To the Future happening at Sunshine Cinema tonight // DO IT, MARTY!

  • Ummm, first of fucking all, please wake up at a decent hour so we can all go to the Film Forum for a screening of Freaky Friday at 11am sharp because IT WILL BE THE GREATEST MOTHERS DAY OF ALL TIME.
  • Afterwards, let’s hit up the Morbid Anatomy Museum for a SIDESHOW OF MAGIC, which goes until 6pm (starts at noon) and will feature sword swallowing, contortion and other real weird shit for five bucks a ticket.
  • Or if you feel like doing something productive or whatever, then head to Brooklyn Brainery for a course that intends to demystify the phenomenon that is indoor composting for forty-five bucks a ticket.

  • And later tonight you might also consider hitting up another round of I’m New Here, Can You Show Me Around? featuring Wyatt Cenac, Jon Ronson, Maeve Higgins and MORE for ten bucks a ticket at Union Hall.
  • Or if you didn’t get all the dancing out of your system earlier on in the weekend, you’ve got another opportunity tonight via the Pendulum DJ set that’s set to take place at Output for ten bucks in advance, twenty day of show.
  • PERSONALLY I think we should all get to Elvis Guesthouse for a show from Fred Thomas, which is set to take place at 9pm tonight for the INCREDIBLY low price of five bucks a ticket.
  • And speaking of five bucks, you can also catch If You Build It: A Stand-Up Comedy Show at UCB East featuring Christian Finnegan, Eliot Glazer and MORE beginning at 8pm tonight.
